Paris, 127 people, and the last 5 days in America

The murders in Paris are terrible.  This diary is not meant to diminish that.  And obviously it makes sense to interpret these acts in the context of the ‘war on terror’ and the war against ISIS in which both France and the US are involved and the asymmetric sort of warfare in which these types of attacks are a key tactic by one side.  That’s undeniable.

The goal of this diary is to make a simple point.  As you hear our politicians and pundits expressing their sympathy and talking about this terrible tragedy and talking about its implications for our policies and — perhaps — arguing that it should send us to war, judge them also on whether their sympathy and their resolve also extends to victims of a much more deadly ongoing tragedy in America.  127 people (so far) were killed by ISIS in Paris.  127 Americans have been murdered by Americans with guns in the last 5 days.  I suspect that the loudest American voices crying for action against the perpetrators of the Paris attacks will also be the ones who do everything they can to make sure that the carnage in their own country goes on and on and on.
